The Ausable Wulff - Dry Fly - Dry Fly lot of 12
flies for $9.50.
The year was 1964, it was a dark drizzly September
afternoon on New York's west branch of the Ausable river where Fran Betters
,since he was a kid, had been fishing with his father.. After years of fishing
the Ausable and studying numerous insects he noticed a particular curiosity
relating especially to the large stonefly and mayfly nymphs in the rivers of
the Adirondacks. They seemed to have a slight rusty orange coloration in the
thorax and some red in the heads of the flies. Fran spent 2 hours that
afternoon tying up a new pattern, and the next day went out with just that one
fly and in the first 15 minutes he landed a 14" brown, then 4 more 14" browns
and one 21" brown. Thus the Ausable Wulff was born on that day on the banks of
the Ausable river. The rest is history.
This fly is world known and not
only matches the hatch on many rivers but is a great go to attractor pattern.
The next time you head out to your river , make sure you have several Ausable
Wulffs in your fly box.

" It's always a good time for Blue Winged
Olives"
The Blue Wing Olive is one of my favorite dry flies for many
reasons.
#1. Because the window of its fishing viability is extremely
long, it is one of the few flies that stays in my box all year long.
#2. It is easy to identify in the air.
#3. It catches Trout.
Blue-wings like soggy days. On some of those days the air seems to be
alivealmost electric, an excitement you can feel. The best fishing occurs
on those days. They can also come out in full sun, but heavy hatches of
blue-winged olives on bright sunny days are the exception.
Blue Wings
usually hatch in sufficient numbers to get the Trout interested and keep them
interested. The main thing is to be prepared for them. Be ready with a long
leader and spools of fresh 5X and 6X tippet, and because you might need a spool
of 7X, be ready with nymphs, cripples and emergers. |

The March Brown American -
Dry Fly - (Lot of 12) AVAILABLE IN SIZES #12, #14. $9.50
|
The March Brown American - Dry Fly lot of 12
flies for $9.50.
It is peculiar that this pattern should include the
month of March in it's name since the natural insects are not confined to
hatching in this month. The March Brown likes large stony rivers just like
stoneflies. The March Brown pattern is one of the oldest angling flies around.
As far back as the 1600's it is recorded as being a fly pattern of choice in
England. The fly is known by many different local names like Brown Drake, Dun
Drake or Cob Fly. This fly pattern universally works when there are no hatches.
It seems to function as a universal attractor pattern for dark insects. The
nymph remains at the bottom of the river for over two years undergoing a series
of moults as it grows. A large Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear nymph or a Pheasant Tail
nymph is an ideal choice as a match for the March Brown nymph.
After
the hatches of tiny midges and Blue winged olives the March Browns are normally
the first large mayflies of the year. They always seem to hatch in cold rainy
afternoons. they can hatch from mid February and continue into May. Look out
for bird activity as a great indicator that the hatch has started.

"The Royal Coachman Dry Fly" tied by UMPQUA
Tyers for a BUY IT NOW in a minimum lot of 12 flies for $9.50. The Royal
Coachman is perhaps the most famous fly pattern in American History. It was
created in 1878 by a New York professional fly Tyer named John Hailey as a more
durable (and only incidentally, more beautiful) version of an older pattern
called the Coachman. It was given the name "Royal Coachman" by L.C. Orvis,
brother of Charles Orvis, the founder of the Orvis fly fishing company which is
prominent today.

Lee Wulff did not create the Royal Wulff. He created the Gray
and White Wulff in 1929. Q.L. Quackenbush, an early member of the Beaverkill
Trout Club is credited with designing the Royal Coachman hair wing dry fly. Lee
Wulff developed his own series of dry fly patterns. Wulff noted that dry flies
with wings and tails of feathers get slimed up and are not very durable. To
Lee, the solution was obvious, use bucktail (deerhair) for tails and wings. He
found that the fish seemed to prefer the bulkier flies that "looked more" like
the naturals than the feather wing patterns. |
The Griffith's
Gnat Dry Fly - Dry Fly - (Lot of 12)

 |
"The
Griffith's Gnat Dry Fly" "tied by Umpqua Tyers for a "BUY IT NOW" minimum lot
of 12 flies for $9.50
Midges or gnats are the stable diet of most
trout. These tiny insects are found on most rivers, lakes and streams. This
popular American Fly is used to imitate egg-laying adult midges and emerging
midges. George Griffith, one of the founding fathers of the American Trout
Unlimited, created one of the most important midge dressings. The Griffiths
Gnat is a simple fly. The beauty of it is how it floats half in and half out of
the surface film, representing something stuck, trying to emerge from it's
schuck. After having had some coverage in the British and European Fly Fishing
press it has now successfully crossed the Atlantic. Hatches are normally during
the evening and often prolific. |

BUY IT NOW in a minimum lot of 12 flies for $9.50 .
Contrary to the
popular opinion, the San Juan Worm does NOT imitate a garden-variety worm.
Instead, it is supposed to represent an aquatic worm.
For those of you
who have never observed an aquatic worm, I encourage you to obtain a nymph net
and do some prospecting in a portion of a stream that has a mixed sandy and
muddy bottom. Some aquatic worms can grow to about the size of a small garden
worm,( see photo in listing ) but most are small like the one pictured, in
listing, that is smaller than scuds and sow bugs.

Stoneflies nymphs provide fish with many high-energy meals, and
imitations provide anglers with excellent action all season long, but
especially just before and during a hatch. This fly should be weighted
accordingly and fished dead drift or crawled along the bottom.
EVERY
FLY BOX should have a selection of these flies in various colors. Remember 90%
of a trouts diet is below the surface.

The Mouse Imitation Pattern
Fly - (Lot of 6) $9.50
|
The Mouse Imitation Pattern Fly - Dry Fly lot
of 6 flies for $9.50.
Fly fishing mouse: Many people think that fly
mouse patterns are only used for bass fishing, not so. A fly fishing mouse
pattern is very effective for trout such as large brown trout. A trout will
generally take the fly fishing mouse pattern by the tail first in an effort to
drown the mouse. Then it will take the whole mouse in its mouth, which can be
confusing if you try to set the hook on the first strike. It's usually
advisable to wait for the second hard strike to set the hook. A fly fishing
mouse is also a great bass pattern, and when a hungry bass is in the water, a
juicy mouse is very hard for any bass to resist.
I always recommend
carrying a fly fishing mouse pattern (Size #6) in your fly box, you never know
when it will do the trick on a large brown trout.
I always have great
success at around the start of dusk when I cast it so that it bounces off a
large protruding boulder or the opposite bank, and then I use a slow retrieve
with a twitch now and then to imitate the natural as it tries to swim to
safety. I started using this fly and method several years ago while on one of
my favorite streams and at the end of the day as I was walking back to my jeep,
I saw a real mouse fall off the bank and swim very slow as it tried to reach
the opposite bank. Then "bang'', it was gone.
Usually a trout will take
it under by the tail and try to drown it before swallowing it, so you have to
wait about 2-3 seconds before setting with your 3 x tippet. A bass will whack
it whole from the surface. |
