The March Brown American -
Dry Fly - (Lot of 6)
 |
The March Brown American -
Dry Fly - (Lot of 6) AVAILABLE IN SIZES #12, #14. $7.50
|
The March Brown American - Dry Fly lot of 6
flies for $7.50.
It is peculiar that this pattern should include the
month of March in it's name since the natural insects are not confined to
hatching in this month. The March Brown likes large stony rivers just like
stoneflies. The March Brown pattern is one of the oldest angling flies around.
As far back as the 1600's it is recorded as being a fly pattern of choice in
England. The fly is known by many different local names like Brown Drake, Dun
Drake or Cob Fly. This fly pattern universally works when there are no hatches.
It seems to function as a universal attractor pattern for dark insects. The
nymph remains at the bottom of the river for over two years undergoing a series
of moults as it grows. A large Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear nymph or a Pheasant Tail
nymph is an ideal choice as a match for the March Brown nymph.
After
the hatches of tiny midges and Blue winged olives the March Browns are normally
the first large mayflies of the year. They always seem to hatch in cold rainy
afternoons. they can hatch from mid February and continue into May. Look out
for bird activity as a great indicator that the hatch has started.

The Blue Wing Olive - Dry Fly lot of 6 flies
for $7.50.
" It's always a good time for Blue Winged
Olives"
The Blue Wing Olive is one of my favorite dry flies for many
reasons.
#1. Because the window of its fishing viability is extremely
long, it is one of the few flies that stays in my box all year long.
#2. It is easy to identify in the air.
#3. It catches Trout.
Blue-wings like soggy days. On some of those days the air seems to be
alivealmost electric, an excitement you can feel. The best fishing occurs
on those days. They can also come out in full sun, but heavy hatches of
blue-winged olives on bright sunny days are the exception.
Blue Wings
usually hatch in sufficient numbers to get the Trout interested and keep them
interested. The main thing is to be prepared for them. Be ready with a long
leader and spools of fresh 5X and 6X tippet, and because you might need a spool
of 7X, be ready with nymphs, cripples and emergers. |

The Royal Coachman - Dry Fly - (Lot of 6)
$7.50
|
The Royal Coachman is perhaps the most famous fly
pattern in American History. It was created in 1878 by a New York professional
fly Tyer named John Hailey as a more durable (and only incidentally, more
beautiful) version of an older pattern called the Coachman. It was given the
name "Royal Coachman" by L.C. Orvis, brother of Charles Orvis, the founder of
the Orvis fly fishing company which is prominent today.

The Royal Wulff Coachman - Dry Fly - (Lot of
6) AVAILABLE IN SIZES #8, #10, #12, #14, #16, #18, #20. $7.50
|
| Lee Wulff did not create the Royal Wulff. He created
the Gray and White Wulff in 1929. Q.L. Quackenbush, an early member of the
Beaverkill Trout Club is credited with designing the Royal Coachman hair wing
dry fly. Lee Wulff developed his own series of dry fly patterns. Wulff noted
that dry flies with wings and tails of feathers get slimed up and are not very
durable. To Lee, the solution was obvious, use bucktail (deerhair) for tails
and wings. He found that the fish seemed to prefer the bulkier flies that
"looked more" like the naturals than the feather wing patterns. |
The Griffith's
Gnat Dry Fly - Dry Fly - (Lot of 6)

 |
"The Griffith's Gnat Dry Fly" "tied by Umpqua Tyers for a "BUY
IT NOW" minimum lot of 6 flies for $7.50
Midges or gnats are the stable
diet of most trout. These tiny insects are found on most rivers, lakes and
streams. This popular American Fly is used to imitate egg-laying adult midges
and emerging midges. George Griffith, one of the founding fathers of the
American Trout Unlimited, created one of the most important midge dressings.
The Griffiths Gnat is a simple fly. The beauty of it is how it floats half in
and half out of the surface film, representing something stuck, trying to
emerge from it's schuck. After having had some coverage in the British and
European Fly Fishing press it has now successfully crossed the Atlantic.
Hatches are normally during the evening and often prolific. |

Contrary to the popular opinion, the

to represent an aquatic worm.

The San Juan Worm - (Lot of 6) AVAILABLE
IN SIZES #10 & #12. COLORS: Red ONLY $7.50
|
| For those of you who have never observed an aquatic
worm, I encourage you to obtain a nymph net and do some prospecting in a
portion of a stream that has a mixed sandy and muddy bottom. Some aquatic worms
can grow to about the size of a small garden worm,( see photo in listing ) but
most are small like the one pictured, in listing, that is smaller than scuds
and sow bugs. |

 |
Umpqua Ultra Shrimp, Popovics - (Lot of 6)
AVAILABLE IN SIZES #2 and #4. $10.99
|
| The Ultra is the most realistic and successful grass
shrimp imitation in use along the east coast. You can fish it, deadrift, around
shoreline grass beds or under floating mats of eel grass. You can also fish it
in a current at a predetermined depth by attaching a strike indicator to your
leader and allow the Fly to drift along with the tide. This is a favorite
procedure of New Jersey Striper Anglers. A SUPER PRODUCTIVE technique is to
chum the water with grass shrimp. Throw only a few at a time every minute or
so, into the current, allowing them to drift with the tide, usually near inlets
or along jetties. After ten minutes, let your fly drift back into the slick
with the line taut to detect a pickup, but not enough to inhibit the drift of
the Fly. Weakfish and Stripers have succumbed to this technique for
generations. |

Practical Fly
Selection for Salt Water by Captain John A. Kumiski
"There is an expression used by scientists, Occam's razor. The idea
is that if there are two theories, each of which plausibly explains a
phenomenon, the other which explains it more simply and elegantly is probably
the correct one. Occam's razor explains my approach to Fly selection-KEEP IT
SIMPLE.
Where you live and what you fish for most of the time will
color your choice of flies, of course. In spite of this, some flies are so
universal in their appeal to gamefish of all types that they need to be by
almost all saltwater flyrodders. In my travels, I see the same classic patterns
in the Fly boxes of all the good Fly Fishers it's been my fortune to meet.

LEFTY'S DECEIVER is a superb example of this
universal type of fly. With it's shape imitating that of so many different
types of baitfish, it's ability to be adapted and modified to fit differing
conditions, and because it can be tied in sizes ranging from two inches to over
ten inches in length, Deceivers can be and are used to catch everything from
panfish to billfish. ALL Fly Fishers need a selection of these Flies in various
sizes and colors.
BOB CLOUSER'S DEEP MINNOW is another example of a Fly
that ALL fish will eat. A simple tie of lead, steel, and bucktail, more than
fifty different species of fish have been taken on Clouser minnows. They are a
standard on everything from bass to bonefish.
The SEA HABIT HERRING
BUCKTAIL, adds so much enjoyment to the Fly Fisher's life.

The British salmon fly
tying traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries that used exotic materials and
complicated patterns were exported to the countries the British exported and
occupied. In North America and other parts of the world, gradually these
pattern were changed and new ones designed to make use of the more easily
obtainable local animal skins and feathers. They were also designed to suit the
different natural conditions and local fish. Hairwings were used instead of
brightly colored feathers from tropical birds. They worked as well if not
better, Hairwing salmon flies have now become the norm and the traditional
feather-winged patterns are now more commonly found as framed works of art that
hang in gentlemen's studies and behind bars.
The Silver Doctor is one
of the fully dressed patterns much loved by salmon anglers of the 19th century
and early 20th century. The dressings of these patterns were extremely
complicated and included many exotic plumages from endangered birds. Modern
substitute materials have enabled the Silver Doctor still to be fished,. It is
one of the flies that the British took to Norway and Canada at an early date
with great effect. James Wright was its designer back in 1850. The silver body,
red and blue coloring make this fly distinctive.
Fly Fisherman and Tyer
, Dave Botelho has obtained the tying recipes of these Scandinavian Classics
and has had them duplicated precisely by Umpqua Fly Tyer John Kimani.
NOTE: These Classics are tied on a # 2 Black hook with no gut eye and
imitation jungle cock is used to perfection. |
