Traherne won the title with a box of 18 of his salmon flies.

The British salmon fly
tying traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries that used exotic materials and
complicated patterns were exported to the countries the British exported and
occupied. In North America and other parts of the world, gradually these
pattern were changed and new ones designed to make use of the more easily
obtainable local animal skins and feathers. They were also designed to suit the
different natural conditions and local fish. Hairwings were used instead of
brightly colored feathers from tropical birds. They worked as well if not
better, Hairwing salmon flies have now become the norm and the traditional
feather-winged patterns are now more commonly found as framed works of art that
hang in gentlemen's studies and behind bars.
The Silver Doctor is one
of the fully dressed patterns much loved by salmon anglers of the 19th century
and early 20th century. The dressings of these patterns were extremely
complicated and included many exotic plumages from endangered birds. Modern
substitute materials have enabled the Silver Doctor still to be fished,. It is
one of the flies that the British took to Norway and Canada at an early date
with great effect. James Wright was its designer back in 1850. The silver body,
red and blue coloring make this fly distinctive.
Fly Fisherman and Tyer
, Dave Botelho has obtained the tying recipes of these Scandinavian Classics
and has had them duplicated precisely by UMPQUA Fly Tyer John Kimani.
NOTE: These Classics are tied on a # 2 Black hook with no gut eye and
imitation jungle cock is used to perfection. |
Hi Dave:
I just had to drop you a
line to express my appreciation of your flies and the marvelous
extras you sent. I could not fish with those flies and instead will be
getting them framed. My wife can do calligraphy so she will put the name under
each fly. They are works of art! You should be very proud of your ability to
tie them. The beautiful framed flies you sent me as an extra will be going to
my office to hang for all to admire.
My older brother has a
Lodge a log cabin on a cliff overlooking the Medway River in southern
Nova Scotia. It is full of Adirondack hand-made furniture and has a deck across
the back of the cabin looking out over a bend in the river, with one salmon
hole at one end. I am planning to give one frame of flies to my brother to hang
on his fishing camp wall.
The other frame of flies will hang on my
wall to remind me of the artistic side of salmon fishing. I will use the
Miramichi collection this summer when my son and I go salmon fishing. We will
certainly be thinking of you then!
My four brothers and my son, Scott,
and I get together every year for a fishing trip - either for salmon or trout.
This years trip took place last weekend, but unfortunately the sculpin
fly collection did not arrive until yesterday so I did not get a chance to try
them out. This year we each caught 15 to 20 trout on the Mersey River, over two
days ( catch and release ). We stayed at the Lodge, told stories (tall tales)
and ate too much all weekend lots of fun.
I will be sending a
surprise to you. It is from another of my hobbies. I may take a week or so
preparing it for shipment so it will not arrive for at least three or four
weeks.
Thanks again for all your kindnesses. They are very much
appreciated!
Sincerely, Alexander L. Steeves, M.D. (Sandy)

This selection of Salmon
Flies, in size #2 double black hook are a blend of the old and the new in
Scottish salmon fly fishing. Old favorites like the Stoat's Tail and Monroe's
Killer claim their well deserved place in your fly box alongside the new breed
of patterns like the Cascade and Ally's Shrimp, which have proven so effective
in recent seasons. This Hairwing Salmon Fly Selection offers practical variety
for Summer and Autumn salmon fishing. The smaller, darker patterns will, in
general, be of the most use in low, clear or warm water conditions while the
larger, brighter patterns will come into their own in high, cold or colored
water.
Fly Fisherman and tyer, Dave Botelho has obtained the tying
recipes and has had the selection tied by UMPQUA tyer John Kimani. |
Just a quick hello from Rex Tucker in New Brunswick Canada.
I tried your flies in Newfoundland this summer and they worked great. I will be
buying more later because if I did not loose them someone wanted them because
of the quality of the flies. Here is a HELLO shot of me with one of the many
Atlantic Salmon caught in my CURRENT home province of New Brunswick. Nothing
like fishing regardless of what you fish for.
Excellent new site I have
bookmarked and will be getting some flies from ya later on in the
year.
NOTE: Both Atlantic Salmon were released. |
Miramichi Salmon Flies-

|
 Miramichi River |
The Miramichi Salmon Fly selection is being
offered as a Complete Elite Set of 24 Flies (2 Dozen) in the most popular size,
(#8), for "only" $ 45.95 plus shipping and handling. (These flies sold
individually average $ 3.75 ea.)
The Miramichi River's fame rests
primarily on its unmatched ability to produce Atlantic Salmon. The King of
fish. Some 100,000 ranging in size from 1.4 to more than 13 kg (3-30 lb) make
their way up the river every summer and fall. This one river produces nearly
one half of all the rod caught salmon in North America. New Brunswick Rivers
usually yield over 30,000 fish to anglers' flies. For more than a century the
Miramichi Has attracted the elite of sport fishermen from all over the world.
After an extensive research, which included, books, articles, journals
and interviews, Dave Botelho has put together a collection of "Miramichi Salmon
Flies" that he considers will cover all seasons and conditions for Fly Fishing
the best Atlantic Salmon river on the planet. UMPQUA tiers tie these
flies.
Next to Fenway Park, the Miramichi was Ted Williams' second home,
and Dave has included in the selection some of Teds' favorite flies. (Green
Butt Black Bear, and bright & orangey flies such as Tippet Shrimp &
General Practitioner). |
